ESL: Enrollment and Identification of Limited EnglishProficient (LEP) Students

ESL instruction is designed to meet each LEP student’s individual needs based on the results of the Home Language Survey and assessments in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The Home Language Survey is completed by/for every family upon registering in the school district. If the Home Language Survey indicates that a language other than English is spoken in the student’s home, i.e., the student’s primary language is other than English, the following procedures will be followed:

  1. The District Registrar will notify the Supervisor of Special Services and provide a copy of the Home Language Survey and the Registration Form. The original Home Language Survey form will be forwarded to the student’s school of attendance for placement in the cumulative folder, and a copy will be placed in the student’s special education file, if appropriate.

  2. The Supervisor of Special Services will notify the ESL program staff at the student’s school of attendance and forward the copy of the Home Language Survey and the Registration Form to the ESL staff there. The school principal and the ESL staff will be notified of the date the student will begin school.
